Interactive Whiteboards & Screencasting, My first Screencast!

show me

Screencasting is a very valuable tool for the classroom.  The benefits for students is that  a lesson does not have to be learned within the classroom setting.  Everyone learns at different rates and some may need reinforcement of certain ideas.  Through apps such as Show Me we can make lessons accessible to students on their own time frame. With this the student has the ability to pause, rewind or fast forward a teacher or lesson.  This is also a creative way for students to create study materials or test preps.

The app I chose to create my first screencast was Show Me, to download the app and create a screencast it was free.  In order to download the creation to my camera roll I had to become a member at $5.99 per month.  I tried becoming a member but was unable to download  the video to post to You tube.  The app itself was simple to use and easy to put together.  If you want to create screencasts and embed them into your sites it will do that action without downloading.

Overall I am happy with the way it turned out and can see myself using it more once I get into the classroom.

Week 4 Blog Reflection: How to Teach Essay Writing

image Essay writing should be a goal of every teacher to help garner writing techniques among students.  Essay writing is a great way to stimulate thought and promote sharing of ideas.  If students struggle with how a essay should be put together then it will be a frustrating experience for each student.  The blog post written by Robert Morris gives many different options to help promote writing.

I will mention a few here that I believe can be of great use in the classroom.

Ninja Essays offers coursework for high school essays at about 18 dollars.  It will construct materials and textbooks for your class that will build essay writing skills.  You can also choose from several different content areas.

Turnitin in is a great tool for the anxious student who is not confident in their writing abilities.  They are able to turn in their essay and get professional advice on their papers.  The  features include: general comments, originality report, voice comment, grading rubrics, and QuickMark sets.

Writing Roadmap offers a way to inspire and improve the writing skills of those in 3rd through 12th grade.  It will also offer the teacher a way to track the progress and proficiency of your students.

iMovie Trailers: The Diary of Anne Frank

I was able to use the iMovie app to create a movie trailer for an introduction to The Diary of Anne Frank.  Within thirty minutes I was able to create a trailer that I believe will generate excitement for the learning material.  Most of the work to create the video was done for me.  All I had to do was plug pictures where I wanted them and add my own titles for transitions.

I then used youtube capture to post the video to my own youtube channel.  This was another very simple process and only took about two minutes to upload.

Youtube offers a place to store and share your videos all in one location.  I believe all three of these apps would be very useful in the classroom not only for introducing new material but also for allowing creativity to flow within the classroom.  Students could use the apps to create study aids for test prep or just reinforce ideas taught that day.

Create a Comic

I decided to look into the educational aspect of Comics and found a few apps available to make even the novice comic book person seem like an expert artist.  The App I chose to make the below comic strip with is called Make Beliefs.  It is a free app that allows you to pick the number of frames up to four and then has backgrounds and characters for you to choose from.  It was a very easy app to navigate easy to get a simple outcome.

I thought this would be a fun way to introduce the idea of search words through the Ngram Viewer in google.  The viewer gives you a graph based on how much your chosen word was used in works of literature over time.  When you type in declaration as suggested by the below comic it shows that it was used twice as much during the revolution years as compared to today.  The comic allows this idea to be introduced in a fun and exciting way.

I could see this as a great tool for the teacher and the students.  Students could create study aids and have a fun way of thoughtfully expressing material.

My First Tellagami Project

tellagami

Tellagami has two different versions to choose from, a free version, and a Tellagami Edu for $4.99.  For this App review I chose to work with the free version.  When working within the app I found it extremely easy and was able to make my first one in about a minute.  The part that took the longest was finding a picture that I wanted to use for my background.  If you do not want to search for or through photos you can also use the backgrounds that come with the app.

I used the app to create a introduction to a history unit over American Presidents.  I am excited to have the students use to create a tellagami to answer a short answer essay exit question.  Instead of just writing in a journal I believe the students could have fun in a creative atmosphere answering the same question.

The only drawback is it’s limited in the creation of your character.  You should be satisfied with only one hairstyle and limited choices of clothes.  Other than that, it is a great app with great potential in the classroom

ted ed

This week I stumbled upon the blog Educational Technology and Mobile Learning.  This blog has many fantastic articles for educators.  There was one entry in particular that was about a group I had always heard about but never had the time to really look into.  It was about TedEd.   After looking into what TedEd offers and has available I was quite impressed and started seeing great applications and ways in which to use the information.  The blog states that the videos that are created are perfect for flipped classrooms.  After investigating the videos I found that they offer a lot of information in a concise format and are very entertaining at the same time.  These videos are made in such a way that any student would love to watch and learn from.  I am looking forward to incorporating these into lessons plans and using them to engage students.  In fact if you click on the below image it will take you to one of my favorite lessons.
